GRIMSBY TOWN CENTRE

A New Market Square

In collaboration with North East Lincolnshire Council and the operators of Freshney Place Shopping Centre, the projects aims to directly confront the issues facing Grimsby town centre in an effort to halt the slow decline of the high street and shopping core.

Since the loss of House of Fraser, BHS and numerous other shop closures, the onslaught of Covid has decimated the town centre leaving numerous empty units and poorly activated streetscapes. The vision for New Market Square is to partly demolish the west end of the shopping centre to create a new, quality public square fronted by desperately needed leisure and quality food & drink units; something that the town centre and its users have been desperately lacking.

The first phase of a longer-term regeneration masterplan will relocate and upgrade the existing town centre market, forming a new centre for the community at the heart of the town centre, stimulating regeneration, drive growth, improve experience and ensure the future sustainability of Grimsby. The project aligned to the timescales of the Government’s Future High Streets Fund and in 2019 Grimsby was announced as one of the early beneficiaries of the scheme, signalling a new light for change in the town.
